《따뜻한손 Volume.1 #1-100》은 판데믹동안 경험한 손과 몸에 대한 인지, 그 안에 내재된 불안을 마주하며 시작된 프로젝트다. 캐나다 토론토 기반의 대한민국 태생 작가 이베타 강선영은 이러한 불안으로부터 휴식하는 방법을 지침서의 형태로 포스트잇에 적어 약 3년간 온라인으로 공유했다. 《따뜻한손 Volume.1 #1-100》은 이 지침서들과 에세이, 시, 사진 등을 실험적으로 엮은 아티스트북이다.
《따뜻한손 Volume.1 #1-100》의 원작은 「Tenderhands」란 제목의 다원 매체 프로젝트로 그간 퍼포먼스 비디오, 온라인 관객 참여형 퍼포먼스, 이메일 구독 프로젝트(새로운 지침서의 구독을 원하는 사람은 ‘손’ 이라고 하면 떠오르는 단어를 작가에게 ‘기부’함으로서 구독을 완성했다.) 등 긴 호흡으로 다양한 미디어를 통과하며 소개되었다.
《따뜻한손 Volume.1 #1-100》은 원작인 「Tenderhands」 프로젝트를 책의 형태로 확장, 구현해보는 제안이자 시도다. 책에는 작가의 모국어인 한국어로 번역한 100개의 지침서와 친구들의 에세이가 담겨있으며, 함께 동봉된 포스트잇을 연상시키는 노란색 트레이싱지를 사용해 문장을 읽도록 제안하며 작가의 미감과 의도를 녹여내고자 했다.
《Tenderhands Volume 1. #1-100》 is a project initiated during the global pandemic by a South Korean-born, Toronto-based artist, Ivetta Sunyoung Kang, as they observed, self-reflected and confronted different layers of anxiety embodied in our body and hands and our awareness of the bodily experiences. Kang inscribed more than 300 instructions on post-its to ease anxiety and propose poetic methodologies through which somatic resting can occur.
《Tenderhands Volume 1. #1-100》 is a Korean version of the first volume of the Tenderhands project, where Tenderhands instructions, essays, poems and photographs are gathered within the artist book. Tenderhands was conceived and manifested as a multidisciplinary project across performance videos, participatory performances, and an email subscription project over three years. Within the subscription project, audiences subscribing to the subscription for new Tenderhands instructions “donated” their words associated with the word--hands.
《Tenderhands Volume 1. #1-100》 is another artistic endeavour to embrace the multilinearity of the Tendehrnads project by the medium of a publication. It contains the first 100 instructions, translated into Korean, essays written by Tenderhands friends, and a yellow tracing paper sheet that proposes a reader to use to “reveal” each instruction as a subtle performance within the act of reading
