Tenderhands는 작가 이베타 강선영이 포스트잇에 쓴 일일 지침서 시리즈로 시작되어 다원 매체 프로젝트로 발전한 작업이다. 팬데믹이 전 세계를 강타했을 때, 작가는 테이블에 앉아 시적이고 신체적인 방식으로 손과 신체의 불안을 완화하는 방법을 상상했다. 대부분의 지침서는 신체 거리에 대한 의문과 새로운 개념이 사회 속에서 시행되었을 때 집이나 길거리에서 느끼고 관찰한 내용을 반영하고 있다. 항상 외부로 노출되어있고 감정의 잔재와 트라우마를 담는 손에 대한 인지는, 우리 몸의 특성을 다각도로 살펴보도록 진화되었다. 이베타 강선영의 지침서는 독자들에게 자신의 손, 사랑하는 사람의 손, 낯선 사람의 손에 대해 다시 질문하고 살펴볼 것을 제안한다. 또한 독자/관객들로 하여금 직접 몸을 움직여보도록 하는 지시문을 통해 사적인 신체와 공적인 신체 사이를 넘나드는 불안정한 행위를 생물정치적적 관점으로 확장해볼 것을 요청한다. Tenderhands는 그간 참여형 퍼포먼스, 설치형 버전, 퍼포먼스 비디오, 자주 출판 DIY아티스트 북, 그리고 레프티프레스와 함께 한 《Tenderhands Volume 1. #1-100》으로 선보였다. 《따뜻한손 Volume.1 #1-100》은 원작인 Tenderhands를 책의 형태로 구현해보는 제안이자 시도이다. 책에는 작가의 모국어인 한국어로 번역한 100개의 지침서와 친구들의 에세이, 지난 관객들이 ‘기부’한 단어 (새로운 지침서의 구독을 원하는 사람은 ‘손’이라고 하면 떠오르는 단어를 작가에게 ‘기부’함으로서 구독을 완성했다.)를 포함하고 있다. 동봉된 노란색 트레이싱지를 사용해 독자가 문장을 ‘드러내어’ 읽도록 제안하며 작가의 미감과 의도를 녹여내고자 했다.

Tenderhands is a multi-dimensional project whose first interaction began as a daily series of instructions handwritten on Post-its. Kang started by sitting at the table and imagining how to ease the anxiety of hands and body in poetic and somatic ways as the pandemic hit the globe widely. Most instructions reflect what Kang felt and observed from home or on the streets when the new notion of bodily distances was in effect to be practiced. The project evolved to look at the multifaceted nature of hands and the other body parts that are always exposed to the outside and carry some revealed residues of emotions and one’s traumas. The instructions also urge readers to look again at the hands of themselves, loved ones, strangers or unanimated objects. By inviting readers/audiences to confront those instructed questions regarding the re-realization of one’s body, precarious acts of channelling between private and public bodies are evoked with biopolitical inquiries. Tenderhands has evolved into different forms of presenting creations; participatory performance, installation version, in-video performances, a self-published DIY artist book and a publication, 《Tenderhands Volume 1. #1-100》 with Leftie Press. 《Tenderhands Volume 1. #1-100》 is a Korean version of the first volume of the Tenderhands project that includes the first 100 instructions out of 300.  《Tenderhands Volume 1. #1-100》 is another artistic endeavour to embrace the multilinearity of the Tenderhands project by the medium of a publication. It contains the instructions, translated into Korean from English, essays written by Tenderhands friends, and a collection of donated words from past audience members that are associated with the word–hands. It encourages a reader’s participation by using a yellow paper sheet that helps “reveal” each instruction as a subtle performance within the act of writing.
